Southern Sweden and Malmö jazz culture in the making!
Southern Sweden, Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö are growing into a lively jazz community. Malmö is full of young artists who love the city’s slow and relaxed pace, a “small but big city” feeling. Malmö and Skåne is a place just next to the vibrant big city lights of Copenhagen, but without the high living costs and competitive environment.
Here, there’s space and time to create music from a calm and friendly place. The music isn’t rushed or stressed; it moves like a slow walk down Simrishamnsgatan, full of quiet thoughts and emerging poetry. It’s jazz that takes its time and lets the sounds breathe.
At the same time, the music mixes playful styles from different cultures, of Nordic sadness, and electronic sounds. This mix makes a special brew where old and new come together. A mix that often is thaught on the “Folkhögskolor” in Skurup and Svalöv.
The jazz culture here is built on the dedication of passionate young and older people, community organizers, and the wave of left-wing solidarity movement from the 1970s. Today, new spaces for live jazz music are popping up everywhere and even the copenhagians cross the sound to go hear jazz at club Underground in Lund!
Whether it’s Hannes Bennich, Anders Bergcrantz, or Alice Hernqvist, you can feel all of this in their music!
