Sound Spaces, 26 september - 6 oktober
Sound travels. It starts somewhere, moves through space, and reaches us differentthan it left. This ninth edition of Sound Spaces is built around that idea.
Morton Feldman was born a hundred years ago this year, and he runs through theprogramme twice. On the 27th of September Ars Nova Ensemble plays his VerticalThoughts 2 inside Touch, a programme where contact — finger on string or key,breath against tube — is the subject rather than the technique. On the 2nd ofOctober the Ensemble gives a whole set to Feldman and John Cage — Dialogues —an hour built around a long conversation between the two.
Three ensembles come with repertoire of their own, most of it written for them:Duo Signal from Basel, saxophone and trombone; Duo Diabas from Gothenburg,with flutes, cello and electronics; and Spółdzielnia Muzyczna from Kraków.
Duo Diabas and the local ensemble Ars Nova’s Dialogues share the evening of 2October at IDUN, a venue we are exploring for the first time, together with the firstof Attila Faravelli’s two appearances: field recordings played back through ananalogue equaliser and rebalanced live, so that distances hidden inside a recordingcome forward. That evening requires registration in advance: remember to bookyour spot! The next morning Faravelli presents his Aural Tools, objects built to beused rather than looked at, and in the afternoon Spóldzielnia Muzyczna plays inKirsebergs kyrka.
Together with the doctoral programme at Lund University we are hosting threelectures at Inter Arts Center, each connected to music you can hear at the Festival:Faravelli on situated listening, Fabio Machiavelli on building the instrument youthen compose for, and Giovanni Verrando on Camera Music, which mdi ensembleperforms the same evening to close the Festival.
Also this year, Sound Spaces collaborates with composers and supports the creationof new music: Jonatan Sersam’s, Fabio Machiavelli’s and A2 Abd El Monim’s piecesare performed for the first time ever, and were written especially for this occasion.
